"the old swing behind our house" from at willow's edge for String Orchestra (Full Score and Parts) PDFs
Instrumentation: Strings
Difficulty: Grade 3
Duration: ca. 4.5 minutes
Program Note: I’m returning home after many years away. Familiar trees along the front path. Old journals, letters, and photos. All the hope I had and dreams for the future. Ephemeral, wistful glances of my siblings in the backyard; rocking back and forth on the swing, playing in the sand box. Pure love.
Also, a poem about my favorite backyard tree with whom I shared all my deepest thoughts:
at willow’s edge you stand
and as the moon and stars change it remains
a constant company keeper of memories protector of dreams
when you were a child
its branches danced gaily
when you cried
knotted arms reached out
leaves whispered words of encouragement
its hymn seems to have always existed and yet its melody is new
every year in the spring
and so, when you go you carry its song (and a tender song it is) you carry its song with you
Document Sizes: Score and parts are formatted for printing on A4 size paper, though these technically could be printed on any size paper. A popular substitution would be letter (8.5”x11”) size paper.
